February 12, 2016 was probably one of the most memorable days in my life because…I WENT TO EXO’S CONCERT! EXO’luXion was fucking awesome!

My friend and I had pretty decent seats and we were close to the stage. We debated on getting GA (floor seats) tickets but then we were like we’re short and if there are tall people in front of us then we are sooo screwed. In the end, we got row 10 seats in the section right next to the stage.

I was nervous a few days before the concert when I read online that Kai couldn’t make it to the Dallas concert because of issues regarding his Visa. My heart sunk when some people mentioned he might not be able to make it to the show in Vancouver either. I just couldn’t imagine what a concert would be like without him. He’s the main dancer and one of the many reasons why I wanted to see EXO live. I wanted to see him exude his passion for dance on stage and of course to also see his smirks and adorable eye smiles. But thank all the holy deities and beings up there, Kai was able to make it!

The concert was held in a sports stadium at a university (UBC). No offense to UBC students, but your university is located in the middle of nowhere. It takes most people an hour (at least) by bus to get there because there are no Skytrain (Vancouver’s train system) stations. I arrived at the school around 4:30pm so I could pick up free banners and concert merchandise my friend and I ordered. Luckily, there were no complications and everything went smoothly. Special shout out to EXO-V Fanclub for giving attendees freebies!

My friend and I lined up at the stadium at 6pm just like what MyMusicTaste told us to do. According to MMT’s facebook page, they said they would let people in at around 6pm. Did that happen? Nope. We waited until 7:40pm before they let people in, and mind you, the concert was set to start at 7:30pm. Normally, I wouldn’t complain about the wait because hello I was going to see EXO live and breathe the same air as them, but it was raining (for a while) and I was freezing my butt off outside. I saw a couple of girls wearing skirts and couldn’t help but to give them a sidelong glance. Because, really? This is Vancouver, not LA.

Once I was inside, I realized half of the stadium wasn’t even filled up yet. The GA floor was literally only one fourth full and people were still only trickling in. By then, you could probably tell that I was slightly annoyed with how unorganized this entire proceeding appeared to be.

Thankfully, the concert eventually started a little after 8pm and my annoyance completely dissipated and forgotten when I finally saw EXO come out on to the stage. They were all so handsome, pretty, and good looking. Words really cannot describe how perfect each of them looked. It felt super surreal to see them up close like that and to realize they are human, living and breathing beings. The feelings I had while watching them perform live was vastly different from watching them perform behind a screen. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that they were physically in front of me and performing right before my eyes.

Chanyeol was the life of the party as usual. The happy virus lived up to his reputation and riled up the crowd with his rapping, deep voice, and hair ruffling.

Baekhyun playing the piano was one of the highlights of the show. He was so passionate (and hot) while playing My Answer. I already knew he had pretty decent piano skills, but I never realized Baekhyun was that good until I heard him play live. My regret is that I wasn’t close enough to get a better view of him playing. I also need to mention Baekhyun’s damn good dancing abilities. He may be known as the main vocalist of EXO, but boy, his moves are slick and to the point. I would say Baekhyun displays as much passion in dancing as he does in his singing. His style is obviously different from Kai; nevertheless, I could easily see his talent and the energy he puts into every dance.

Watching Kai dance behind a screen is already pretty mesmerizing, but watching him perform live is at a whole different level. He has so much control and his movements are all so fluid. My eyes naturally gravitated towards him to watch him dance his heart out.

All of EXO sounded amazing. The rapping and singing were all mind (and ear) blowing. I would say Chen especially killed it. His voice was so beautiful and his high notes were astounding as usual. Watch my fancam of Chen performing Miracles in December to see what I mean.

I’m not going to lie, but I was super sad when they didn’t perform El Dorado. I saw a few fancams from previous shows of the El Dorado performance and it was dope as hell. I really wanted to see them dance to that song live and to see Baekhyun belting out his high notes. BUT NO IT DIDN’T HAPPEN /sobs in my tiny corner/. I’m assuming they swapped out this song for History because their stage in Vancouver wasn’t large enough for El Dorado /sad reality/.

On the bright side, EXO actually performed two songs that I thought I would never, ever, ever, see them perform live again. Their performance of Drop That and Dubstep Intro was a happy (and very welcomed) surprise. I have this weird obsession with Dubstep Intro. For some reason, I just love watching them dance to this song. Anyways, Drop That hyped everyone up. All the fans had so much fun during that song. I’m really hoping this song will appear on their next album or something. If not, at least release it as a digital single, pleasseee. It’s so good and addicting.

Their English was super cute and humerous. I loved that they made an effort to speak to us in English despite having a translator. I would say Suho was probably the funniest because the first few things he said were something along the lines of Vancouver being sunny. If you watch my fancam, you’ll hear the fans (and my friend) laughing and saying nooooo because sunny weather is like a foreign concept in Vancouver, especially during any months aside from May to August. And plus, the day they arrived in Vancouver, it was pouring like crazy. Ah, Suho is so adorable. And also Umin and Chanyeol needs to calm down on the maple syrup cookies and candies XDDD. Canada, especially Vancouver, has other tasty things like smoked salmon and other seafood. I hope they had a chance to eat them during their short stay.

Of course, I also have to comment on Kyungsoo’s English! He was like, “I like Vancouver. I luuuv Vancouver. And…I’m hungry [insert awkward Kyungsoo laugh]. Everyone no hungry?”. WHY ARE YOU SO SQUISHY??? He then proceeded to tell us what the menu was for the night. Turned out, we were supposed to eat sushi rolls, haha.

I thought I would share what I’ve been listening to these days.

The new groups that I’ve finally given a chance to are Day6 and Seventeen.

Day6 is a six member band under JYP and debuted this year. They made their first appearance in WINNER’s survivor program. As far as I know, they still haven’t performed on any music shows because JYP wants them to be an “authentic band”, meaning that he wants them to play live. If you look closely, bands, such as FT Island, aren’t actually playing live when they are on music shows – heck, most of the time their guitars aren’t even plugged into amps. So that is why you’ll find many fancams of Day6 performing live on the streets of Seoul floating around. What Day6 really now needs is their own reality show so that fans can get to know them better. From the few radio interviews I’ve watched, I can say that this group has some crazy members (in a good way). JYP, it’s time to let the world know Day6 a little better, don’t you think?

I’ve also been listening to some songs from Seventeen. Really, don’t let the name fool you as the group only actually has thirteen members. I’m very wary of large groups for obvious reasons (Super Junior and EXO) and I automatically ask myself, how long will they last before someone leaves the group? Anyways, I’m still in the process of learning all their names and roles in the group. What I do know is that they compose their own songs, much like Day, and also contribute in choreographing the songs. The two title tracks that they’ve released so far are Adore U and Mansae.

Click B’s Reborn is another song that I’ve listened to. This is technically a retro group because they debuted in the late 1990s. I’m not well versed when it comes to the first generation idols. The groups that I’m familiar with are G.O.D, Shinhwa and H.O.T. Honestly, I’ve never heard of this group until Click B’s new MV popped up on my YouTube subscription page. I decided to give their MV a chance, and well, I’m glad that I did because I really liked Reborn. It’s too bad that they didn’t promote this song on music shows because I thought it would have sounded great live.

Now that many first generation idol groups have come back together to release new albums, I think H.O.T need to step up their game and do the same thing.

I tried to get into WINNER and iKON but it is still a bit hard. Don’t get me wrong, I had so much fun watching WINNER’s reality show like why isn’t there a season 2 already. They have good songs, but unfortunately none of them have really captured my interest. Furthermore, I don’t really understand iKON because their songs seem quite biased toward Bobby and B.I. I know these two plays a major role in composing music, but they should let the other members shine more. The others have plenty of talent as well. In this regard, WINNER feels more balanced in that everyone has equal amounts of attention.
